Description

The water monitor is a large predatory lizard native to south east Asia. These large carnivores prey upon anything smaller than they are, and as the name suggests, they spend much of their time in water. All members of Veranus fill a certain role in the ecosystem of which they live. The water monitor’s role is a top level carnivore keeping small mammal and fish populations in check. This animal can reach lengths over 6 feet, making it one of the worlds largest lizards behind the Komodo dragon and crocodile monitor.
This skull belonged to that of a young adult male, and was cleaned with dermestid beetles. This lizard had an abscess on its nose, and this abscess caused the bone to dissolve on one side creating some very interesting pathology. This skull has been photographed with a U.S. 50¢ piece to show size. Please see photos for details.
