Wire cutters are used to cut wire in several situations.  The blunt nose of the cutter allows you to cut wire that is against a branch while not harming the branch.  You can also cut your wire from the coil while wiring.  No tool can replace wire cutters and they should be one of the first tools in your tool collection.
The 7" size is primarily for use on shohin and mame (small) trees.  This smaller wire cutter should be used to cut wire up to #24 - #10 copper and most aluminum wire.
