The thick blanket of smog that has engulfed most of northern India has hampered transport activities alongside posing a great threat to public health in general. Due to the low visibility amid dense smog there has been a rise in road accidents in parts of the region in the past few days.
On Tuesday, two people died and over half-a-dozen others were injured after a roadways bus collided with a truck due to low visibility at Ghatampur National Highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur. Truck driver Praveen Kumar died on the spot and bus driver Mohit Yadav died during treatment, police said.
The police and fire service team reached the spot and took the injured to Ghatampur hospital with the help of an ambulance, where the doctor gave first aid to the people who received minor injuries and referred the seriously injured to Kanpur District Hospital.
At least 19 people were injured after a collision between two trucks and a bus on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway of Greater Noida in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Ecotech 1 police station in-charge Anuj Kumar said that two trucks and a bus crashed on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway due to fog. “First a truck collided with another truck and then a bus also collided with this truck from behind. There were passengers in the bus, they also got injured in the accident. After getting the information, the police reached the spot and took everyone to the hospital with the help of an ambulance,” he said.
Meanwhile, six girl students received injuries after a bus from Gayatri Devi Higher Secondary Girls School collided with a sugarcane loader in UP’s Muzaffarnagar.
Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot and rushed the injured girls to the Muzaffarnagar District Hospital. Later, the damaged school bus was towed by a crane and the road was cleared as well.
According to the information, two of the six injured school girls were referred to the district hospital due to their critical condition where they are undergoing treatment.
In Firozabad, another city in western UP, four people were injured after five cars collided with a parked truck from behind one after the other amid heavy smog on Tuesday morning, officials said.
Four of the injured were admitted to Saifai Medical College, while another was admitted to the Shikohabad Hospital.
A truck was parked on the highway. Due to fog, nothing was visible. The cars kept colliding with each other from behind. Five or six cars collided with each other. There were many injured in this. One of my family members is also injured. I have brought him to the hospital,” Krishna, one of the people affected by the accident, said.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR has reached the 500-mark in several areas with the visibility dropping considerably in the capital and nearby cities as there seems no respite from smog-related woes any time soon.
